It’s that bad seasons for children when they get high fever without a reason. ROSHANI DEVI tells you how not to rush to the doctor and treat the fever at home

If it is just a fever and your child is alert and drinking enough fluids (at least 2 litres through the day), he or she can be treated at home for this simple viral. But make sure he is urinating normal amounts and responding to generic medication like Crocin or Ibujesic plus. The need here is to dress the child lightly and not wrap him up in blankets, waiting for perspiration. The child’s body needs to cool down for which for can run the fan at speed 2 or 3 for enough circulation of air and even switch on the A/C at 26 degrees to keep the temperature from rising.

The main thing is fluids, plenty of them — let him sip with a straw don’t bamboozle the stomach with an entire glass if he doesn't want to have. The need here is to keep him hydrated. Actually, cold foods are fine if he does not have a throat infection or accompanying cold and chest congestion. Cold juices, soups and dahi keep the temperature down, so give lots of it. Do not forget the good old coconut water, it has multi-vits and is also great for hydration. If the fever is rising and touching 102-plus, stand the child under a lukewarm shower for 20 minutes. Water evaporation will help bring down the fever.

Generally, the headache is due to developing dehydration so all the above is necessary. But do consult a doctor if there are accompanying symptoms like vomiting, nausea, shortness of breath etc. Blood tests can wait for at least two to three days of the fever.
