Constable, pantry staffer arrested for stealing fake notes from vault
A constable of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and a pantry staffer were arrested by the Delhi Police for stealing Rs 1.5 crore fake Indian currency notes from the vault of the agency’s headquarters here.
The duo presumed the counterfeit currencies to be genuine ones, an official said on Wednesday, adding that the fake notes kept in the vault were seized by the NIA while probing a case in Gurugram in May.
The Delhi Police arrested the two last week and registered a case against them.
“An exhibit containing fake currency was stolen from NIA Malkhana last week by one constable and a pantry staff. The stolen notes were recovered soon thereafter. Appropriate legal action was taken in the matter,” a senior NIA official said.
In another case, the Union Home Ministry is seized of the matter that comes close on the heels of a probe being conducted by NIA against three officers of the agency for allegedly demanding Rs 2 crore bribe from a businessman accused in a terror funding case related to Falah-e-Insaniyat Foundation, a front of the Pakistani terror group Lashkar-e-Tayyaba.
The allegations against the three officers are being probed by a DIG rank officer and in the meanwhile, the trio has been transferred out to ensure a fair probe with two, including a fingerprint expert and an Assistant Sub Inspector, sent to BSF deputation.
The extortion was allegedly led by an SP rank officer who has been transferred to Lucnow NIA office. After the NIA was empowered with more authority following amendment in the NIA Act, the alleged extortion bid by the NIA officers has come as a serious concern for the premier federal body.
