Scindia’s Kothi Mahal set for renaissance: A glimpse into Ujjain’s rich heritage

The magnificent Kothi Mahal of the Scindia royal family in Ujjain, a symbol of regal grandeur and over a century of history, is poised for a remarkable rebirth. The Madhya Pradesh Government has unveiled plans to transform this architectural gem into a world-class ‘Kumbh Experience Centre’, a project valued at Rs 275 crore and set to be completed ahead of the 2028 Ujjain Simhastha (Kumbh Mela).

This initiative seeks to blend the splendour of royal heritage with cutting-edge technology, turning Ujjain into a global destination where history, spirituality, and innovation converge.

The century-old palace, once a royal residence built during the reign of Maharaja Jiwajirao Scindia between 1887 and 1888, will soon become a living museum of faith and tradition. Through immersive storytelling and advanced digital experiences, visitors will be able to relive India’s ancient spiritual heritage and the rich history of the Kumbh.

The project will be executed in two phases — the first dedicated to restoring and preserving the Kothi Mahal’s historic architecture, and the second to introducing modern digital installations and experiential technology. Once complete, the center will house six interactive zones, five digital galleries, a virtual reality dome, augmented reality experiences, and 3D projection theatres. Visitors will explore stories from India’s epic past through AI-assisted exhibits, virtual pilgrimages, and cultural documentaries, making the experience both educational and deeply immersive.

According to Ujjain Municipal Commissioner Abhishek Mishra, the project will adhere to international museum and design standards, incorporating expertise from global heritage consultants. Construction is scheduled to begin on May 1, 2024, with the initial phase estimated at Rs 45 crore. The original budget of Rs 80 crore was expanded to Rs 275 crore to integrate advanced features and world-class infrastructure.

Historians note that the Kothi Mahal, constructed under British supervision, uniquely blends Rajput, Mughal, and Maratha architectural styles. Its transformation into a modern cultural landmark not only preserves the essence of India’s royal past but also reimagines it for future generations.

When completed, the Kumbh Experience Centre is expected to position Ujjain as a year-round hub for tourism, culture, and spirituality, drawing both domestic and international visitors. More than just a restoration, the project symbolizes a revival — a seamless fusion of heritage and innovation, where the echoes of history meet the promise of the future.

Early this year, Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav had laid the foundation stone for the ‘Veer Bharat Museum’ at Kothi Mahal. However, when the preparations for Simhastha 2028 commenced, it was decided to transform this architectural gem into a world-class ‘Kumbh Experience Centre’.
