An employee of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) working as a maintainer in the Electrical and Maintenance Department, allegedly committed suicide between 8 am and 8.30 am on Sunday by hanging himself at his rented apartment situated in East Delhi’s Shahdara area and streamed it live on Facebook.

The victim — identified as Shubhankar Chakraborty (27), a native of West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district — was seen in the viral video wearing the DMRC uniform and climbing atop a water cooler. He looked into the camera a couple of times, kissed his company identity card twice before ending his life. He had joined DMRC in June.

Before hanginig self, Chakraborty posted on his Facebook timeline, “I quit.” Also, he put a picture with a cigarette with caption, “one last time”.

However, the Delhi Police said no suicide note was found at the site and the victim, who is married and his wife and parents reside in West Bengal, was found hanging from the ceiling.

Police came to know about the incident after Chakraborty’s friend Suryakant Das informed them  at 9.05 am, said police.

“In his police statement, Das said his another friend Akash informed him around 8 am that he had watched a live video  on the FB in which Chakraborty was seen committing suicide,” said the police official of the Farsh Bazar police station.

Das informed another friend Rajender Ojha about the incident before reaching the suicide spot. When the two reached the victim’s house, the room was found closed from inside and when they peeped into it through a window, they found Chakraborty hanging.

Police said they are working to find out the reason behind the suicide to ascertain if he took the extreme step due to a fight or any other reason.  They said Chakraborty had a fight with his father who visited him two days ago.

When Chakraborty ended his life, a mobile phone kept buzzing in the background. The family has been informed and the body has been shifted to Subzi Mandi mortuary, police said. He has a sister who is married.

The DMRC refused to comment on the incident saying it was not subject of police investigation.
