The roads of the national Capital will soon become congestion free as the Delhi Traffic Police has identified tasks for the 48 corridors out of the 77 that fall in the Category ‘B’ and ‘C’.
Also, the Home Department of the Delhi Government has called a review meeting with all agencies concerned on Wednesday to discuss the matter before filing the status report before the apex court on October 10. For the de-congestion project, the corridors were categorised in group A, B and C as per their importance.
Sources said the agencies, especially the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), are not indicating any specific timelines to finish the identified tasks.
“The review meeting will discuss the progress achieved on the tasks (pending/under progress) which were to be completed by August/ September) as per the timelines specified by the respective agencies on the 28 corridors of Category A and other indentified tasks for which no specific timelines has been indicated by the agencies, particularly Delhi Development Authority,” said a senior official.
Further, the meeting will discuss the rest of the identified tasks for the Category B and C and the tentative specific timelines for the completion of the indentified tasks from the agencies concerned. The traffic police have identified tasks as well as the rest of the important corridors by categorising into B and C to make the roads smooth and free for commuters. Around 30 corridors have been identified under Category B, and 18 in C. The corridors identified were from the districts and zones.
“To make the city roads smooth for commuters, even the smallest roads have been identified in order to clear the congestion caused due to various reasons. For instance, on Pusa Road, from Baba Dayal Chowk from R/A Pusa road stretch, including the Karol Metro Station, there is no parking lots available. The people use the public parks to park the vehicles creating traffic congestion. So, the task identified here is parking lots and multilevel parking complex to avoid congestion,” said a senior official close to the project.
As per the documents, a copy of which is with The Pioneer, a total of 163 tasks have identified under the Category B, while the tasks in the Category C is 104. The tasks include widening of the roads, construction of foot-over-bridges, flyovers, underpasses, using scientific methods to re-develop the roads and removing the unnecessary bus shelters, electric poles and transformers constructed on the roads, redevelopments of the roads that are broken and spoiled during metro constructions, removal of roadside/footpath encroachments among others.
Further, on the old Patparganj road, around 85 electric poles and 31 telephone poles installed at the middle of the road from the Jheel Chowk to Khureji Chowk will be removed. Jhuggis, workshops on pavements will be removed.
In another task, in the North-West Delhi’s Bakhtwarpur, The Delhi Traffic Police has advised to cancel the licence of around 42 farms/banquet halls that are constructed on the roadside. “None of them has any parking space. During marriage season, the vehicles are parked on the main Ring Road causing huge traffic jams. Hence, licence of these farmhouses is required to be cancelled.”
“The road engineering team is working and locations with tasks have been identified. We are in talks with the civic authority for the specific timelines and other modalities,” said Taj Hassan, Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Delhi.
The agencies which will work on the tasks are Public Works Department (PWD), all the three Municipal corporations (MCDs), Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), DDA, Delhi Jal Board, Delhi Transport Corporation, I&FC, power discoms, New Delhi Municipal Council and other concerned agencies. The large numbers of tasks are assigned to the PWD with 77 in Category B and 44 tasks in Category C.
