Jammu & Kashmir liberation Front (JKlF) chief Yasin Malik was on Sunday arrested for slapping and attacking policemen during a protest in Srinagar.
In a video, the separatist can be seen slapping and attacking policemen, while his supporters hurl abuses at the cops.
The incident took place when Malik and his supporters were protesting against the BJP-PDP alliance’s stand on Kashmiri Pandits. Police detained Malik and later took him into custody for spreading unrest in the State.
The JKlF chairman on Saturday tried to take out a rally against the alleged high-handedness of the Special Operation Group (SOG) of local police during a raid on his Maisuma residence here. Malik was taken into custody at Budshah Chowk and lodged at Shergari Police Station in the city after he led a rally to lal Chowk from his Maisuma residence to protest the raid on his house shortly after his release on bail from central jail on Saturday, a JKlF spokesman said.
He said police also resorted to teargas shelling and used batons to disperse the rally, leading to clashes in Maisuma.
“Malik was arrested on May 25 and was released on bail from Srinagar Central Jail on Friday night. At around 11.30pm, policemen raided his house and started beating and abusing his family following which the people of Maisuma came out to lodge their protest against this but police resorted to teargas shelling and also used pepper gas,” the spokesman said.
Prior to his arrest, Malik addressed reporters on the main road and claimed that he is being targeted because he started a campaign to bring about a unity between factions of Hurriyat Conference and JKlF.
