A Delhi Police Sub-Inspector and three women constables were suspended on Saturday for allegedly beating up the two women inside Rohini South Police Station. In their complaint, the victims alleged that police had brutally thrashed them on Friday to extort a confession in a six-month-old theft case.

Both the victims, in their early 20s, live in Mangolpuri area. The victims said that seven police officials including four women constables came to their house on Friday morning and took them to Rohini South Police Station. The police accused them of being involved in a theft in a company where they worked as telephone operators.

“The police forced my sister to confess to stealing jewellery. When she refused, she was beaten up with batons. They also threatened to insert batons into her private parts,” the victim’s sister told The Pioneer. She alleged that police personnel had abused her sisters using filthy language. She also alleged that police women tried to uproot their fingernails with pins. Meanwhile, Joint Commissioner of Police RS Krishnia said Sub-Inspector Rajveer and three women constables — Mamta, lakshmi and Shagun — posted at Rohini South Police Station have been suspended.

A case under Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 330 (voluntarily causing hurt to extort confession), 342 (wrongful confinement), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code and the SC, ST (prevention of atrocities) Act has been registered against the police officials.

After getting reports of alleged police brutality on the women, AAP MlA and former Delhi Minister Rakhi Birla, along with her supporters, created ruckus in the police station and demanded action against the police officials. The battered women were taken to Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital for initial treatment. The family members of victims also gathered at the hospital and made a PCR (police control room) call against the alleged brutality on women.

The victims' parents said that their daughters were taken to police station around 9 am. They were not allowed to meet them in the lock-up, they added. “We were not allowed to enter into the police station, when we came to meet our daughters,” said the father of the victims. “They were tortured continuously for seven hours. They could barely walk when they were allowed to go,” said the father. Their conditions are stable, he added.
