Punjab Police on Monday evening questioned Olympic medalist Vijender Singh on his role in the drug seized by the Fatehgarh Sahib district police last week and on the disclosure made by fellow boxer Ram Singh

Senior police officials refused to give details of the questioning in the recovery of 26 kg heroin worth Rs130 crore.

"As per the procedure, in the presence of two private witnesses, he (Vijender) was asked for his consent for giving his blood and hair samples required for forensic examination for investigation purpose, which he refused," a spokesman of Punjab Police said.

Vijender was quizzed by a two-member probe team of Fatehgarh Sahib Police, headed by a DSP and an inspector. Officials said that Punjab Police teamed up with its Haryana counterpart to question the boxer at Panchkula.

"The two-member team went to Panchkula to the office of Hardeep Singh Doon, SSP Crime & Telecommunication, Haryana and questioned Vijender in his office regarding the drug case registered last week. He was examined from 5 pm to 8.30 pm," said a senior police official, without giving details of the interrogation.

Sources said that Vijender was asked about the recovery of his SUV near the residence of prime accused Anoop Singh Kahlon, an NRI and alleged drug peddler and also the statement of his sparring partner Ram Singh that the duo had taken small quantities of the drugs as "food supplement".

Earlier it was decided that Vijender would be called to the Punjab Police Headquarter at Chandigarh but the probe was shifted to Panchkula police line.

Vijender was called for questioning after five days of the drug haul. His name cropped up in the case when his SUV, registered in the name of his wife Archana was found near Flat number 7-A in Shivalik Vihar, Zirakpur in Mohali.
