Victim of 32 stabs: CM gives kin Rs5 l, orders probe; Govt blames police

Published on:

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday announced a compensation of Rs5 lakh to the family of 19-year-old Meenakshi, who was stabbed 32 times to death in Anand Parbat, and ordered a magisterial probe into the case, while slamming the Delhi Police for the “deteriorating” law and order situation. Deputy Magistrate of Central District will investigate the murder.

Kejriwal said that he will summon the Delhi Police Commissioner on Monday to discuss the case and the prevailing law & order situation. Delhi Home Minister Satyendra Jain held Delhi Police responsible for the murder of the girl. Jain has written to Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi and sought explanation within 48 hours.

The Chief Minister, accompanied by Manish Sisodia, visited Meenakshi’s family and assured them of all possible help. “The law and order situation is deteriorating in Delhi every day. The Delhi Police comes under the Centre. Either he (PM) should do something or the Delhi Police should be handed over to the Delhi Government,” Kejriwal said.

Making a strong pitch for handing over of the Delhi Police to the city Government, the Chief Minister said, “If the Delhi Police is not answerable to the Delhi Government, then how will they be held accountableIJ Right now, the Delhi Police is a law unto itself.”

Delhi Home Minister Satyender Jain wrote a letter to Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi, seeking his explanation on why an FIR was not registered against the accused despite repeated complaints from the victim.

“The family of the deceased girl (Minakshi) had filed numerous complaints against the accused, Jai Prakash, since 2013 with the local police, but no FIR was registered,” Jain claimed.

“The report which is to be submitted to the Government should also include identification of lapses by senior police officers in reviewing law and order situation pertaining to crime against women vis-a-vis past complaints lodged by the family of the deceased and fixing of responsibility,” he said.
