Curfew relaxed for 1 hour; only women and children allowed to venture out to buy essential goods

Though curfew was relaxed in East Delhi’s Trilokpuri area for only an hour on Monday evening, the area is limping back to normalcy. The Delhi Police is pulling out all the stops to ensure that the area is cleaned and peace is restored.

As a precautionary measure, only women and children were allowed to venture out of their house to buy essential commodities during the relaxation hour between 3.30 pm and 4.30 pm on Monday. However, police permitted plying of essential goods van in the area in the morning as well.

According to sources, Sunday night saw fresh violence in which a shop was set on fire. To keep outsiders at bay, lest they stoke fire in the already sensitive area, the police have started issuing passes to outsiders for movement in the area. Otherwise Trilokpuri is completely out-of-bound for others.

The Delhi Police has decided to assess situation on Tuesday before it takes a call on removing or relaxing the prohibitory order. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday sought a detailed report on the situation and directed the Delhi Police to take all possible steps to contain the communal tension.

To make things easier for the residents who could not come out of their houses for shopping, the Delhi Police arranged milk and vegetable vans in the area. For those using lPG cylinders, the police have tied up with the agencies to make sure the locals are not troubled.

A woman residing in 27 Block of the area said that most people are surviving on bare minimum. “We haven’t been able to go to work for the past three days. We are surviving on old stock and eating just to avoid starvation,” she said.
