Jayalalithaa was admitted to Apollo Hospitals on September 22 for fever and dehydration. A large crowd of AIADMK cadre had collected in front of the hospital to bid adieu to their beloved leader who was taken from the hospital to her residence in what is described as an unprecedented action.

Though the local Tamil News TV channels had reported by evening 5.30 pm that Jayalalithaa was more, the Apollo Hospitals authorities issued a release quelling such news and advised the channels to rectify the mistakes.

The suspense about the condition of the AIADMK supremo continued late into the evening. By this time the police had cordoned off the entire stretch between Apollo Hospitals and Veda Nilayam residence of Jayalalithaa at Poes Garden in Chennai. But if there is any development, we will definitely inform you,” said a senior Raj Bhavan official at 11.30 pm.

As Jayalalithaa was moved out from the hospital to her residence, a period of tumultuous political history dating back to early 1980 also came to an end. It was in 1980 Jayalalithaa entered politics as an ordinary worker of the AIADMK, a party formed by MG Ramachandran, her mentor and former lead man in Tamil films. Before her entry into politics, Jayalalithaa was the top heroin of Tamil movies from 1961 to 1980. An accomplished Bharatanatyam artiste and singer, Jayalalithaa was described as a director’s actress, as any character would synch well with her with élan and poise.
