Surprise as UN note on Af drops T-word

Published on:

In a significant development, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), chaired by India, has dropped a reference to the Taliban from an earlier paragraph in its statement that asked Afghan groups not to support terrorists “operating on the territory of any other country.”

India, which is the president of the UNSC for this month, signed off on the statement and issued it in its capacity as the chair.

On August 16, a day after the Taliban came to power in the country, the UNSC had said, “The members of the Security Council reaffirmed the importance of combating terrorism in Afghanistan to ensure the territory of Afghanistan should not be used to threaten or attack any country, and that neither the Taliban nor any other Afghan group or individuals should support terrorists operating on the territory of any other country.”

But on August 27, the UNSC removed reference to Taliban in the previous statement.
