It was the warmest day in five years for Delhiites on Monday as day temperatures rose to a high of 27.8 degree Celsius, a good six notches above normal. The Met department has predicted similar weather conditions in the coming days, but has not ruled out the possibility of rain on Wednesday and Thursday.

“Monday came as the warmest day in the month of February in five years. The reason for this is the absence of Northerly winds which are very cold and pull the temperature down. Currently Easterly winds are blowing in the city and it is here to stay until February 7,” said a senior Met official. Similar conditions were observed on February 4 in the year 2009 when the maximum temperature was recorded at 27 degrees Celsius. The third warmest February day was recorded on February 3, 2010 when the temperature had shot up to 25 degrees Celsius. last year, Delhi had recorded 24 degrees on the same date.

Even as the Met department has clearly outlined that the winters are not yet over, Monday came as a bright sunny day for Delhiites. The minimum temperature was recorded at 8.6 degrees Celsius which was normal for this time of the year. The humidity levels oscillated between 95 per cent and 35 per cent. Fog conditions too were normal with no major disruptions in flight and train operations.

Met officials have predicted similar weather conditions on Tuesday with the maximum settling at 26 degrees and the minimum at 9 degrees Celsius. While day temperatures are likely to remain the same until Thursday, light rains are expected on Wednesday and Thursday which will lead temperatures to plummet. “Rains are expected due to the onset of a new western disturbance,” he informed.

Sunday’s maximum temperature had settled three notches above average at 24.4 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature was recorded two notches below average at 6.8 degrees Celsius.
