I’ll recuse myself from coalgate probe if SC orders so: CBI Director

On the basis of legal advice, CBI Director Ranjit Sinha on Thursday decided to lodge a case of perjury against lawyer Prashant Bhushan, who has filed a slew of petitions before the Supreme Court seeking the removal of the CBI chief from 2G and coal scam probes.

“CBI Director Ranjit Sinha, on the basis of legal advice, has decided to file the case of perjury for malicious, deliberate and intentional false statement made before the apex court,” an agency spokesperson said in a statement.

Even as the Government mulls easing out the controversial director from the CBI chief’s post, Sinha told reporters, “I will recuse myself from coal scam investigations if the Supreme Court orders so.”

Sinha is facing flak for allegedly meeting officials of accused companies in the 2G scam, persons accused in the coal block allocation scam besides controversial meat exporter Moin Qureshi, who is facing an Income Tax department probe for alleged money laundering.

Sinha has not denied meeting the accused officials of the 2G scam and those accused in the coal scam but has denied having granted any favours to them. The petitioner cited the visitors’ register wherein the accused persons in coal scam are allegedly shown to have been given access at Sinha’s official residence at 2, Janpath.

Another NGO, Centre for Public Interest litigation, had earlier stated in the SC that a visitor register of his residence showed that officials of the accused telecom companies used to regularly frequent his residence.
