A Delhi Police sub-inspector allegedly murdered his 28-year-old paramour for allegedly trying to extort money from him and then shot himself in a park in Sector-4 area of Dwarka on Sunday around 9.45 am. While the woman died on the spot, the policeman succumbed to bullet injuries at AIIMS.

The cop, identified as Vijendra Verma (33), a native of Rajasthan, had an extra-marital affair with Nikita Chauhan, a former news stringer who lived in Dwarka and had separated from her husband, said Western Range Joint Commissioner of  Police Dependra Pathak. Vijendra, who was posted with Ranhuola police station of West district, himself was an accused in a domestic violence case registered on the basis of a complaint filed by his wife in Rajasthan, Pathak said.

An official privy to the probe added that from preliminary investigation it appears that the woman was extorting money from Vijendra and had even allegedly threatened to frame him in a false case.

Investigations have revealed the involvement of another acquaintance of Nikita, who was instigating her to extort money from the sub-inspector.

It appears that the discussion over money led to the heated exchange between the duo and Verma fired three bullets which hit Nikita on her chest and abdomen. Seconds after that, Vijendra pointed the gun towards himself and fired two rounds. While one bullet hit his abdomen, the other hit his chest.

The policeman had asked the woman to come to the park, where they were last seen sitting on a bench and talking to each other. locals called up the police and both were rushed to a hospital, where the woman was declared brought dead and Vijendra succumbed to the injury.

“He was then moved to AIIMS Trauma Centre where he died in early evening,” DCP (Southwest) RA Sanjeev said.

“A case has been registered under relevant sections of law and investigation is underway,” Joint Commissioner of Police Dependra Pathak said.
