Shifting power

This refers to the editorial, “Farewell, Jaggu dada” (September 22). Jagmohan Dalmiya will forever be remembered as a man who made Indian cricket a self-sufficient entity and engineered a shift in its power base from England’s lord’s to Kolkata’s Eden Gardens.

Some called him an ‘old fox’ for his shrewdness; others paid tribute to his financial acumen by giving him the sobriquet ‘Dollarmiya’. His biggest gift to the Indian cricket was to strike a multi-million dollar television deal with WorldTel in the early 1990s, that went a long way in making the Board of Control for Cricket in India the richest cricketing body in the world. Yes, he filled the coffers of the board and the pockets of the players. Game-changer, we may call him. No wonder, in his chequered administrative career, he saw it all: The good, the bad and the proverbial ugly.
