Shami charged with bid to murder wife

A day after Hasin Jehan, the wife of fast bowler Muhammad Shami, met senior officers at lal Bazar police headquarters accusing her husband of domestic violence,  adultery and trying to kill her, Jadavpur police station in South Kolkata on Friday lodged a formal FIR against the quickie and his family members under several Sections of the Indian Penal Code, saud sources, adding that “investigations have started”.

Cases have been registered under Section 498A for cruelty by a husband and his relatives to his wife apart from Section 307 (IPC) — for attempt to murder, Section 323 (IPC) — causing voluntary hurt, Section 376 (IPC) - rape, Section 506 (IPC) — criminal intimidation,Section 328 (IPC) — causing hurt by means of poison and Section 34 (IPC) — acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention, sources said. All but Section 323 (IPC) are non-bailable.

Though the Shami continued to refute the charges saying someone is trying to instigate his wife and there is an effort to ruin his career, his wife, a mother of one, said she had been facing the “torture for more than two years and have tried to adjust to the circumstances but he has refused to see reasons and dared her to go ahead with raising the issue to her own peril”.

Despite her father trying to play down the matter as a routine incident of family discord, Jehan said things had crossed all limits. She earlier said “physical and mental torture had been continuing for more than two years and I never got the status of a wife from him.”

She alleged how the fast bowler was “constantly chatting with other women through FB, Twitter, instagram etc, using objectionable words”. She said her allegations were substantiated by screenshots of pictures and chats that had already gone viral on the social media.

“Though I raised the issue with him hoping he would correct himself he refused to do so and continued with his dirty ways,” Jehan said. “When I warned him with legal action he said nothing would happen to him and that it was she and not he who would be on the losing side.”

Jehan said there were attempts by Shami’s family members even to kill her.

Also, Jehan said she is going to take up the issue with the BCCI “if already my lawyer has not done so.” She said, “If I do not take up the matter with the BCCI then other players may be encouraged to repeat such acts. I will request the Board to take some action against him.”
