SC notice to UP on allowing Kanwar Yatra
Published on:

The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday took suo motu cognisance of the Uttar Pradesh (UP) Government’s decision to allow the Kanwar Yatra amid the Covid-19 pandemic, despite an appeal by the Prime Minister himself against any large gatherings in the country.

A Bench headed by Justice Rohinton F Nariman issued a notice to the UP Government and posted the case for hearing on Friday, July 16.

The Bench also comprising Justice BR Gavai referred to the statement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that no compromise can be made on Covid-19 containment and said that the citizens were perplexed about the happenings in view of the fact that the UP Government has allowed the religious yatra from July 25.

The Bench said that it was a “little disturbed” to read that UP has chosen to continue with the Kanwar Yatra, while Uttarakhand given its earlier experience, has decided against it.
