Senior lawyer Harish Salve, who defended Italy before the Supreme Court, has distanced himself from the stand adopted by the Government of Italy not to return the two marines.
Terming the decision of Italy as "unacceptable", he was quoted by a news channel as saying that that he would not defend Italy's decision if it comes before the Supreme Court.
Salve would take up the matter informally with the Italian Government and impress upon them to honour the undertaking given to the Supreme Court.
Salve had represented the Italian Government's petition in the apex court raising questions over the jurisdiction of India to try the two marines. On January 18 this year, the apex court ruled that India did have jurisdiction although it refused Kerala permission to prosecute the sailors.
