In one of the biggest house burglaries in the national Capital, thieves have decamped with valuables, including diamond jewellery worth Rs 3 crore and Rs 60,000 cash, from a three-storeyed house in Defence Colony area in South Delhi.

The incident was reported from the bungalow No-18 of one Tanmay Seth in the posh Anand lok residential area in Defence Colony in the wee hours of Monday, said a senior police officer. Even after 48 hours, police are still clueless about the burglars.

According to a senior police official, the family of Tanmay, son-in-law of Jet Airways vice-president (security) Avneet Singh, had gone to attend a marriage around 9 pm on Sunday and there appeared to be certain lapses on the part of the family that facilitated thieves’ access to the house.

The family came to know about the theft when they returned from the marriage ceremony in the wee hours of Monday. “The incident was reported around 4 am on Monday. The family told the police that the main gate was left open so that they don’t have to wake up anyone when they return. They also admitted that a window of the house was left unbolted,” said Nupur Prasad, additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, South Delhi.

The thieves might have entered the bedroom on the first floor of the house through the window and decamped with the valuables kept in the almirah, police said. The house had also no security guard at the gate and CCTV cameras, police said.

Two maids and a servant employed by the family were were reportedly sleeping at the time of the theft. Forensic team has collected fingerprints from the place to screen the suspects and teams are working on CCTV footage of the nearby area.

Five teams have been formed out of which two teams are looking after the CCTV footage of the nearby area of Anand lok residential area. Meanwhile a tight vigil is being kept on the movement of the burglars in the area, added Prasad. Forensic team has collected fingerprints from the crime scene. “The two maids and a servant were quizzed. However, the couple gave clean-chit to them,” said another police official.

A case under Sections 457(lurking house-trespass or house breaking by night) and 380(punishment for theft) has been registered at the Defence Colony police station and further investigations were on.
