The Delhi Police on Sunday detained two juveniles on the charge of gangraping a two-and-half-year-old girl in West Delhi’s Nihal Vihar area on Friday. The investigating officers were stupefied to find that the two alleged rapists not only kept in touch with the victim’s family after their ghastly act, they also took part in the protest against the “gangrape”.
The Delhi Police, that took a lot of flak over the brutal act, was helped by the lead provided by the victim’s mother who suspected the involvement of two teenagers from her neighbourghood.
Even after their ghastly act, the two “rapists” kept visiting victim’s house and expressed solidarity with the girl’s family. They even pretended to make efforts to help the distraught family members nab the rapists.
“Both the boys remained in the locality and did not flee from their homes after committing the barbaric act,” sources said. “They kept coming to victim’s house and expressed their anger against the crime,” said an officer involved in the probe.
The younger accused studies in Class IX in a Government school and is more violent than his senior accomplice, who is a Class VIII dropout. Both are addicted to cannabis, the officer added.
At least 24 teams comprising 200 cops of the Delhi Police were tasked to nab the accused. Police questioned at least 1,000 people and detained many of them on suspicion. While a team was questioning the suspects, the girl’s mother pointed out to a youth, who lives in the same locality. She told the police that he used to visit her home to play with the girl.
Following the tip-off, police reached the rapist’s house and subjected him to a rigorous questioning, after which he confessed to his crime. He revealed that he had been visiting the victim’s house for five years. It was an instant plan to commit the act, he told the investigators.
Based on his statement, police managed to identify the other juvenile who too lives in the same locality.
Joint Commissioner of Police Dependra Pathak told The Pioneer that both the accused had come to watch Ramlila organised outside the girl's house. They spotted the girl playing outside her house. "As the electricity was cut off, they took her away taking advantage of the darkness," he added. The girl was later found bleeding profusely in a park. Pathak said that the girl is now recuperating.
