Rain may compound Delhi's Monday blues

Published on:

The national Capital is likely to have another spell of rainfall in the next 48 hours owing to a strong western disturbance, active over the adjoining areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Office goers may have to battle waterlogging and traffic jams on Monday as the Meteorological Department has predicted light rains in the city till Tuesday.

“Delhi witnessed a cloudy weekend on Saturday, with the maximum temperature being recorded one notch below season’s average at 27.3 degrees Celsius. The minimum was recorded at 15.8 degrees Celsius, a degree above normal for this time of the year,” said an official, adding that humidity levels oscillated between 90 per cent and 59 per cent.

“Sunday morning will be misty and one or two spells of light showers are expected during the day,” he added.  The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 26 and 16 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Explaining the reason for sporadic rains in the city, which has triggered a sudden rise in prices of vegetables, the official said, “Intense western disturbances have been active over Afghanistan and Pakistan leading to rainfall, hailstorm and snowfall in the northern regions of India. The disturbance will disperse by March 16.

Another reason is that a low pressure belt has been formed over western Rajasthan causing high winds.” He also explained that that the disturbance formed over Jammu & Kashmir are less severe than the ones formed over Pakistan and Afghanistan.
