Rahul to campaign for Assembly polls in Gujarat today
Published on:

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi will campaign for the party in the Gujarat Assembly elections on Monday when he is scheduled to address a rally each in Rajkot and Surat.

Rahul will take a break of two days from his  ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ before he enters Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday after finishing off the Maharashtra leg of the tour on Sunday.

The yatra will have rest days on November 21 and 22, and Rahul Gandhi will use the opportunity to campaign in Gujarat on November 21.

Rahul did not campaign in Himachal Pradesh where voting was conducted on November 12, while Gujarat is scheduled to vote on December 1 and 5 in two phases.

“Rahul Gandhi will address two poll rallies in Surat and Rajkot on November 21, when the Bharat Jodo Yatra will have a rest day,” informed AICC general secretary KC Venugopal.

The Congress is seeking to oust the BJP from power in Gujarat, where it has been the ruling party for the last 27 years in a row.

The Congress had given a good contest to the BJP in the last Assembly elections in Gujarat in 2017, when the Congress won 77 seats and the BJP 99. Addressing a press conference on the last day of the  Maharashtra leg of the padyatra, Congress chief spokesperson Jairam Ramesh claimed people were looking for an alternative and wanted to get rid of the BJP and the RSS.

Ramesh said the Bharat Jodo Yatra is a “revolutionary moment” for national politics as well as the party and not an event, and converting it into electoral success will take a while.

Ramesh said the yatra will take a break on November 21 and 22 in Maharashtra and will proceed to Madhya Pradesh on November 23.
