A 36-year-old assistant professor was arrested on Thursday for allegedly killing his 64-year-old ailing mother by pushing her off the terrace of their residential building in the city on September 27, police said on Friday after CCTV footage that caught his  devilish crime went viral.

Sandip Nathwani, teacher at Mody Pharmacy College in Rajkot, had earlier claimed his mother had committed suicide.

However, the deceased Jaishree had suffered brain hemorrhage in early September. After treatment at hospital, she had returned to home where she was living with her son and daughter-in-law. But, the stroke left her paralysed in legs. She could not stand up on her own. This fact was troubling police probing suicide angle.

“On 27 September, we got this information that Sandeep Nathwani’s mother died after falling from the terrace. Initially, we reported it as an accidental death. But the death was doubtful, as few days before this incident took place, the lady was admitted in hospital and she was bed-ridden,” DCP Zone II Karanraj said in a Press briefing.

Police apparently got an anonymous letter with the CCTV footage, which showed that Jayshreeben was not even able to walk and it was not possible for her to climb the terrace wall to jump.

“After receiving the application, we checked CCTVs installed in the apartment and the recording clearly suggested that Sandip was with Jayshreeben when she fell off the terrace,” said DCP, Zone II, Karanjraj Vaghela.
