Prajapati at large, aide surrenders

A close aide of Uttar Pradesh Transport Minister Gayatri Prasad Prajapati surrendered before the lucknow Police on the day the Supreme Court refused to grant relief to the SP leader from arrest in a gangrape case. The arrested head constable, Chandrapal, is one of the seven accused in the gangrape case. Prajapati is still untraceable. A local court issued a non-bailable warrant against Prajapati after impounding his passport.

In Delhi, the Supreme Court on Monday refused to interfere with its order asking the UP Police to register an FIR against Prajapati. On an application moved by Prajapati, the SC Bench headed by Justice AK Sikri clarified that its order required the police to register FIR and lamented that the court’s order is being given political twist.

When Prajapati’s lawyers complained against the court monitoring the case, the Bench objected, “We had on February 17 simply directed the registration of an FIR and investigation in these cases. But now political colour is being given to this order. It is unfortunate.” When his lawyers objected to the complaint being frivolous, the SC said it was matter of investigation.
