Financial Investigation Unit set up to check terror funding and track suspected businessmen involved in hawala operations
To check terror funding and track suspected businessmen involved in hawala operations, the Jammu & Kashmir police has set up a Financial Investigation Unit and is also aggressively using the social media to transmit counter narratives to the radical thoughts being put forth by the separatist groups and Pakistan-sponsored terror groups in the Valley.
The Jammu & Kashmir police has set up 30 media cells for catering to the local traditional media like the newspapers.
In addition, Facebook pages and Twitter accounts have been operationalised by all the 26 districts, five ranges and two police zones to reach out to the public on a real-time basis.
Apart from countering the radical propositions and rumours articulated by the inimical forces, the social media tools also help in providing assistance to the public in case of any emergency or disasters, sources said.
Apart from the Jammu and Kashmir police, efforts by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) like registration of cases have helped in monitoring businessmen involved in financing Kashmiri separatists.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had in the closed-door DGPs’ conference organised by the Intelligence Bureau last year advised the security agencies to monitor businessmen involved in financing the Kashmiri separatists.
On PM’s directives to put in place a mechanism for inter-State coordination on security-related matters, a number of such meetings are being held at the national and regional level. A periodic meeting between the Anti-Terrorist Squads and the NIA and periodic coordination meetings are being organised for Naxal-hit States by the IB. The Narcotics Control Bureau is organising N-CORD (Narco Coordination Centre) meetings for preventing movement of narcotics substances in the States.
The measures undertaken by the Jammu and Kashmir police have helped in creating a counter-narrative due which a section of society, especially the middle class and the educated youth question the hard-line propositions and violent agenda of the terrorist groups and the silence of the separatist groups on such issues due to their tactical alliances with the terrorists tanzeems, an Intelligence official said.
The security agencies have further advised the State police to scale up social media presence to check radicalisation by circulating effective counter narratives on dominant issues facing the security situation in the Valley.
The security forces have been able to virtually wipe out the entire leadership of the terrorist groups like the Jaish-e-Mohammad in the Valley during the last over one year.
