PM’s Twitter handle hacked briefly, restored

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Twitter handle was briefly hacked on Sunday, and a tweet claiming that India has “officially adopted bitcoin as legal tender” was put out from it.

Although the handle of the microblogging site was restored later, a link promising a bitcoin giveaway had already been shared from the account and was later deleted.  The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN) is on the job and is trying to identify the source of the hacking incident. Latest technology is being used for the same.

This hacked push for cryptocurrencies comes amid the Centre’s plan to table the Cryptocurrency and Regulation of Official Digital Currency Bill, 2021 in the  Winter Session of Parliament.

Taking to Twitter, the Prime Minister Office (PMO) stated, “The Twitter handle of PM @narendramodi was very briefly compromised. The matter was escalated to Twitter and the account has been immediately secured.
