Opp seeks judicial or ‘reliable’ inquiry

The Opposition on Monday demanded a “judicial” or a “reliable” probe into the Morbi bridge collapse incident even as it asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi if the accident was an “act of fraud or an act of God” alluding to his remarks against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the Vivekananda Road flyover collapse in 2016.

“Why were so many people allowed? There should be an inquiry headed by a retired Supreme Court or High Court judge,” Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, who paid homage to those killed in the tragedy, said adding the bereaved families and those affected should be provided all assistance and given compensation by the Government

“Our (Congress) leaders have reached there. Ashok Gehlot (Rajasthan Chief Minister) is also reaching. We will try to help out as much as possible. We don’t want to indulge in any politics over it or blame anyone at this point of time,” he said.

“Blame can be established only when the report of the probe is out," he added.

CPI MP Binoy Viswam said that the bridge collapse incident points to the "gross negligence" of the BJP Government. "Cable bridge collapse in Gujarat points to the gross negligence of the BJP Government. Its repair was said to be done five days back. From where did the contractors get this courage? The compensation needs to be increased. A reliable enquiry should take place to unveil political involvement," Viswam tweeted.

TMC leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, senior Congress and Shiv Sena leaders Digvijay Singh and Priyanka Chaturvedi, however, targeted the PM reminding him of his remarks after the Kolkata flyover collapse.

"PM Modi taunts Mamata Banerjee over Kolkata flyover collapse. Let there be a few drops of tears, Modiji, over the death of 132 persons in newly-renovated bridge collapse in Gujarat yesterday," Roy tweeted.
