leaving no stone unturned to unseat the Congress-led UPA, the BJP has infused a new lease of life in its ‘lotus’.
The Opposition party has approached the Election Commission with a request to make its election symbol “thicker and bold.” The idea is to make lotus look more eye-catching so that people do not miss it out.
“It struck us that BJP’s symbol on the EVM machines was lighter and thinner. Compared to other symbols on the machine, it sometimes looked unimpressive. So we decided to make this change,” a senior BJP leader told The Pioneer.
Sources in the party claim BJP general secretary Amit Shah pointed out at this “deficiency” and told party leaders to correct it. Shah was reportedly
of the opinion that BJP’s symbol looked lackluster in comparison Congress’
“hand” and that of other parties like the Bahujan Samaj Party’s Elephant.
A representation was made to the Election Commission about a fortnight back and the EC reverted to the party with two samples, one of which was accepted.
“Yes, we suggested the Election Commission to make a slight change. The contour remains the same and so are the design and the theme. The only change is that lotus has been made thicker and bold to bring it at par with other symbols and make it eye-catching,” in-charge of party headquarters Dr Arun Jain said.
A ‘bold’ and ‘thicker’ lotus is expected to figure on the EVM machines in the forthcoming elections, as sources claim that the EC has accepted the sample and approved by the party.
Sources claimed the earlier design was hand made at the time when ballot papers were used for election purpose. The new design has been created on the computer.
