No power tariff hike this year, announces DERC

For the first time since 2011, Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) will not hike power tariffs in the national Capital this year for domestic users. Announcing the annual power tariff for 2015-16, DERC Chairperson PD Sudhakar said on Thursday that there would be no tariff hike this year.

DERC officials added that with Accumulated Revenue Gap consistently decreasing, Delhiites may not face any tariff hikes for the next three to four years.

Welcoming the DERC’s decision, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted, “Congratulations Delhiites. A big relief to u. No power tariff hike. I told u it was possible. All becoz of honest politics.”

The Pioneer had published a story on September 3 that DERC may not hike power tariff due to sustained pressure by the Arvind Kejriwal Government and because DERC chief PD Sudhakar may want to avoid any controversy during the last tariff hike of his tenure as he would be retiring early next year.
