Fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi’s sister Purvi Modi, alias Purvi Mehta, who had earlier been allowed to turn approver in the money laundering case relating to the PNB credit fraud case, has remitted an amount of USD 23,16,889.03 from her UK Bank account to the bank account of the Enforcement Directorate.

“With the cooperation of Purvi Modi, the ED was able to recover approximately Rs 17.25 crore (USD 2316889.03) from the ‘proceeds of crime’,” the agency said on Thursday.

Earlier, Purvi Modi and her husband Maiank Mehta were cited as accused in two cases.

In the Nirav Modi money laundering case, the ED had filed two Prosecution Complaints (charge-sheets) --May 24, 2018 and February 28, 2019-- before the Special PMLA Court. On January 4 this year, the Special PMLA court passed orders on the Application Nos. 1056/2020 and 1054/2020 filed by Purvi Modi and Maiank Mehta, allowing them pardon under Sections 306 and 307 of CrPC on the condition of making full and true disclosure and further allowed that the accused shall be marked as approver in this case.

“On 24.06.2021, Purvi Modi informed the Directorate of Enforcement that she had received the knowledge of one bank account in London, the United Kingdom, in her name, which was opened at the behest of her brother, Nirav Modi and that the funds did not belong to her.  As Purvi Modi was allowed a tender of pardon on conditions of making full and true disclosure, Purvi Modi remitted an amount of USD 23,16,889.03 from her UK bank account to the bank account of Government of India, Directorate of Enforcement, the agency added
