After a video surfaced showing a man, suspected to be a Nigerian, tied to a pole and being beaten up with sticks by a group of men after he allegedly attempted to burgle a house in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, the Delhi Police arrested Krishan Kumar, the houseowner, on Monday.
Kumar (54), a resident of Savitri Nagar, had filed a police complaint on September 24 claiming that the man broke into his house and tried to steal valuables from an almirah kept in his room, police said.
As per Kumar’s account, the Nigerian identified as Ahmed fell down from the stairs and got hurt. Kumar told The Pioneer, “When I tried to catch him, the man ran. When I raised an alarm, my brothers living on the first and ground floor woke up and chased him. The man accidentally fell down the stairs.”
Following the registration of the theft case, Ahmed has been arrested and sent to judicial custody till October 10, police said.
However, contrary to the claims made by Kumar to police, a video was shared on the social media where the Nigerian was seen tied to a pole and brutally thrashed by Kumar and some other people.
But the police investigation claim goes against the video. A police officer said although Ahmed had sustained injuries when he was brought to the Malviya Nagar police
station, police suspected he sustained the bruises due to fall from the stairs.
“The incident took place on the intervening night of September 23 and 24 at around 4am on the second floor of Savitri Nagar area of Malviya Nagar. The suspect was found to be in possession of wire cutter and a bag of master keys. After verification of facts, a case under sections 457, 380 and 511 has been registered,” said DCP (South) Ishwar Singh.
The DCP (South) said, “The suspect Ahmed was medically examined and post arrest, he has been sent to judicial custody till October 10. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Embassy has been informed of his arrest.”
Police said they are probing the matter. The officer said Ahmed belongs to Nigeria and has been living in lajpat Nagar area. locals, however, claimed that the Nigerian man had sustained injuries to his
face, head and limbs after he allegedly fell down while trying to escape.
