Commuters using National Highway 24 — the arterial road between Delhi and Ghaziabad — had a harrowing time on Monday morning as part of the road caved in due to leakage in the water pipeline. The 10-foot deep ditch on the NH 24, approximately 12 km from the Delhi border, triggered a 9-km long jam for several hours, and the police had to divert traffic heading for Noida and Delhi. Vehicles moving towards Delhi were diverted to Greater Noida via Crossing Republik joining the NH-24 at Model Town police post, opposite Shipra Suncity.
Normalcy could be restored on the highway after civic authorities’ sustained efforts of over 12 hours, official said. “Normal flow on the road was restored at 6 pm after joint efforts by Jal Nigam, Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation and PWD,” said Traffic Inspector Anil Yadav. “I have constituted an enquiry committee, headed by GDA chief engineer VK Goel,” said District Magistrate Vimal Kumar Sharma.
Sources said that water supply from Pratap Vihar treatment plant may be affected for a day.
