The “New” Parliament is all set to be inaugurated on May 28 as part of the grand celebrations of Modi.2 anniversary. Sources in the Government said preparations for the inauguration of the new Parliament are in full swing and all the Parliamentarians are being sent a missive to make themselves available in the national Capital during the last week of this month the reasons for which has been cited a probable “function”.

None of the MPs so far communicated was aware of the ‘event’ while a few of them whom The Pioneer contacted confided that they have ‘only’ been asked to be in Delhi during the time.

There is no official word from the Government yet, but cleaning of civil structures, sound and electricity testing has begun perhaps for the occasion. “The new Parliament building will be ready before the end of this month. However, there is no official date yet for its inauguration,” sources said.

The inauguration speculation of the new Parliament started from last years’ Monsoon Session, then Winter Session and there was full chance for the Budget Session start but delayed due to certain finishing works underway.

Construction of the new Parliament building began two years ago. The new building is part of the redevelopment of the Central Vista, the nation’s power corridor. The yesteryear Rajpath was redone and rechristened as Kartavya Path when the first phase of Vista project was inaugurated by the PM.

Revamping the three-km road from the Rashtrapati Bhavan to the India Gate, constructing a common central secretariat, a new office and residence of the Prime Minister, and a new vice-president enclave are also part of the project being executed by the central public works department.

Sources said that new Parliament building is likely to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the fag end of the month the BJP Government will be completing its nine years. Modi laid the foundation stone of the new Parliament building which will have modern facilities in December 2020 when the country was on its path of recovery due to Covid pandemic.

Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had said in November last year that it was up to the Government to select the date of the building’s inauguration.

Tata Projects Ltd is constructing the new Parliament building which will have a grand Constitution hall to showcase India’s democratic heritage, a lounge for members of Parliament, a library, multiple committee rooms, dining areas and ample parking space. The original deadline for completing the project was November last year.
