A criminal case was registered against Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Rajya Sabha member Narendra Kashyap and his family members for killing their daughter-in-law Himani for dowry on Wednesday.

Himani, (29), was found dead with a gunshot wound to her head in the bathroom of her home in Sanjay Nagar, Sector-23, Ghaziabad, on Wednesday. Himani was married to Sagar, the elder son of Narendra, for about two years and had a one-year-old son.

Sagar told the police that Himani had committed suicide using his licensed pistol. However, no suicide note was recovered from the spot. The firearm has been seized by the police.

“We have registered a criminal case under Section 304 A, 498 A of IPC on the complaint of Himani’s uncle Om Prakash against Narendra Kashyap and his family for harassing Himani, demanding dowry and a Toyota Fortuner. No arrests have been made as yet,” said City Superintendant of Police Salman Taj Patil.

Om Prakash has named Narendra Kashyap, his wife Devendri Devi, Sagar, younger son Siddharth, Himani’s sister-in-laws Sarita and Shobha in the complaint.

Meanwhile, Himani’s father Hira lal Kashyap, a Minister in the erstwhile Mayawati Government in UP, said that if the MP was not arrested soon he would commit suicide in front of Parliament.

Earlier, in the day, at about 10.30 am, Himani's in-laws allegedly heard a gun go off in the bathroom and found Himani dead, with her husband's pistol lying on the floor. They rushed her to Yashoda Hospital where she was declared brought dead.

"The family did not inform the police about the incident. The police came to know about it from the hospital memo at about 11.30 am. The medico-legal memo confirmed that she was brought dead by the family," said Patil.
