The Chennai Police is on the lookout for a medical student who threw his pet puppy from the roof of a building in a Chennai suburb just for larks, resulting in horrific injuries to the poor animal.
The horrendous act of cruelty on the trusting and innocent puppy was videographed and posted on the social media by the perverse young man and his friend, shocking people from all walks of life and drawing their ire. Apart from the student who threw the puppy from the top of the building that was five floors high, Chennai Police is also on the lookout for the man’s friend who shot the disgusting video.
The man in the video, identified as Gautham Sudarshan, a medical student at Kundrathur in Kancheepuram district, looks into the camera before the video switches to a slow-motion shot of the helpless animal being flung off the roof and falling to the ground with a thud.
Once the video went viral on the social media, enraged animal lovers approached the police and filed a complaint against the man. “We got information from different students who recognized the student from the video.
It was because of this information that we could lead the police to the right college,” said Shravan Krishnan, an animal welfare activist who led the police to the medical college.
The students of the private medical college where Gautham Sudarshan was studying identified Gautham and his accomplice Ashish Pal. Police are on the lookout for the two students who are absconding.
The incident angered the people so much that an NGO has offered a cash reward of Rs 100,000 to anyone who volunteers information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of the duo. Many animal rights activists have also come out with offers of cash prize for those who will help nab Gautham and Ashish.
Officers at Kundrathur Police Station said an FIR was registered against Gautham and Ashish under provisions of the IPC and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. They also confirmed that they have established contacts with the parents of the two students and have asked them to ensure the surrender of Gautham and Ashish. Some of the students said the incident took place a fortnight ago. Police believe they are hiding in their hometown of Tirunelvelli, 600 km from Chennai.
