In a fight that was half-a-decade in the making, Floyd Mayweather Jr. continued his winning streak at the MGM Grand in las Vegas on Saturday after a unanimous decision by the judges in the welterweight title bout.
Philippines’ Manny “The Pacman” Pacquiao took the fight to him in the 12-round bout but in the end, his jabs didn’t connect enough to impress the judges. Two ringside judges scored it 116-112, while the third had it 118-110, all in favour of Floyd.
In a fight worth at least $300 million, it seemed that pressure never got to Mayweather who had his father with him at ringside, yelling at him to go after the southpaw of Pacquiao. “I take my hat off to Manny. I see now why he is at the pinnacle of boxing,” Mayweather said, adding, “I knew he was going to push me, win some rounds. I wasn’t being hit with a lot of shots until I sit in a pocket and he landed a lot of shots.”
later, it was revealed that Manny injured his right shoulder during training in March but Nevada boxing commissioners denied his request to take an anti-inflammatory shot before the fight. Talking to the media, Mayweather Sr. also disclosed that his son would be hanging up his gloves in September when his current contract with CBS-Showtime ends.
