The CBI is all set to file a closure report in the sensational deaths of two cousin sisters who were found hanging from a tree at Badaun in Uttar Pradesh. The agency dismissed a rape-cum-murder angle in the case and claimed that the teenagers committed suicide. The CBI’s claim evoked sharp criticism from the families of the victims on Thursday, but Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav asked the media to introspect before sensationalising the issue and “defaming the State Government.”.
On the basis of the evidence gathered during the investigation, the agency is also likely to recommend administrative action against UP police officers for an “erroneous” probe. The agency will also mention in its final report the alleged destruction of evidence against three family members and a relative Nazru.
“Based on around 40 scientific reports, the CBI has concluded that the two minor girls in the Badaun case had not been raped and murdered as had been alleged in the FIR. Investigation has concluded that it is a case of suicide,” CBI spokesperson, Kanchan Prasad, said on Thursday.“The medical report from a multi-agency medical board, corroborated by a team of doctors which conducted the first post-mortem during their examination, conclusively says that the girls had committed suicide,” a senior CBI official said. The ligature mark on the neck of the girls and protruding tongue were unique signs indicating suicide, agency sources said.
The girls committed suicide as the affair of the elder one with a local boy got exposed and the younger sister, who was in the know, also felt stigmatized, the sources claimed.Meanwhile, family members of the two teenage cousins said they will move Supreme Court and appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for justice. Piqued over the CBI report, the family members of the two girls said they would commit suicide if they were denied justice.
Reacting to the CBI’s findings, UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav asked the media to introspect the way they had made a mountain out of a molehill and brought bad name to the State Government.“The truth is now out. The CBI has exposed the mystery. The media should now introspect its role in the democracy. It has insulted and defamed the State Government,” Yadav said in a function held on Thursday .
Yadav said the “small mistakes” of the State Government are blown out of proportion while good initiatives easily ignored by the media.“Check internet and old newspapers and you will find what was reported about the incident. You (TV channels) might have deleted the recordings but our departments have all the records about what you had said about the Government,” the Chief Minister said.
