Kin of acid attack victim seek Nirbhaya-like honour

After a day-long protest for justice and subsequent assurance by the Government to meet their demands, the family of Delhi-based Mumbai acid attack victim, Preeti Rathi (23), consigned her to flames on Monday evening. Apart from their other demands, they were demanding a CBI probe.

Earlier the kith and kin of the slain girl had refused to cremate the body until State honours were granted, and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit attended the funeral. The protesters carried her coffin from her residence in Narela and marched towards GT road. However, they were intercepted by the police at several places.

As they insisted on their demands, senior officials of the Delhi Police and Narela SDM Ajay Arora successfully persuaded them to cremate the body albeit after conceding to their demands. The officials promised the protesters to put forth their demands to the higher authorities.
