Kid takes mother's scolding to heart, commits suicide

An 11-year-old son of a small-time businessman committed suicide after his mother refused him permission to go out to play with his friends in North Delhi’s Burari area on Monday evening. The incident came to light when Bittu’s mother Munni went to call him and found her son hanging from a rod in a room on the third-floor of their house. She raised an alarm and informed other family members. No suicide note was found.

“As Bittu’s mother scolded him and asked him to stay at home, the disturbed boy, who studied in Class V, went to the third floor of his house and hanged himself from a rod using his mother’s saree,” said a police official.

An inconsolable relative added, “She (Munni) was doing her house chores when Bittu sought her permission to go out to play. As she denied him permission, he went away. Thinking that Bittu had gone upstairs, she did not pay much attention to it only to realise later that her scolding pushed her beloved son to such an extreme.”

The relative told the police that Munni had scolded Bitto and asked him to remain in the house. “Depressed, he went to the third floor of the house and hanged himself,” said the relative. Bittu’s father Janardhan Rao deals in auto parts. Bittu lived with his parents and four siblings in Burari’s Jharaunda. They are natives of Bihar.
