It’s the judgement day for the much-talked-about Aarushi-Hemraj double murders that have become India’s biggest mystery. A special CBI court will pronounce on Monday the verdict whether her parents — Dr Rajesh Talwar and Nupur Talwar — are guilty in the case.
After the sensational double murders that took place at Talwars’ Jalvayu Vihar residence in Noida on the night of May 15, 2008, the case was investigated by the Uttar Pradesh Police. During the probe, police suspected the involvement of Aarushi’s parents in the murder and arrested Rajesh Talwar on May 23, 2008. Amid growing media scrutiny, the case was handed over to the CBI on May 31, 2008.
In the absence of any reliable evidence, the CBI’s special team submitted the closure report on December 29, 2010 with the note ‘No one can be accounted accused’. Aarushi’s father Rajesh Talwar applied for a copy of the closure report, which the CBI opposed.
In the meantime, Khukla Banjhare (43), widow of late Hemraj, alias M Prasad Banjhare, resident of village Vikas Ward No.1, Dharapani District Ardhakhansi, Nepal, submitted an application before the CBI court to record her statement in which she alleged that her husband was killed by Talwars.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the CBI special magistrate passed an order rejecting the closure report and issued summons to Rajesh and Nupur Talwar on February 28, 2011.
But during trial, on January 25, 2011 Rajesh Talwar was attacked on the court premises after which Talwars applied to shift the trial court from Ghaziabad to Delhi which was rejected by the Supreme Court and trial began in Ghaziabad court.
Then the court issued bail able warrants against Talwar couple. The defence lawyer for Talwars submitted an application before the trial court to record the statements of the 13 witnesses whose name were submitted by the CBI before the SC at the time of opposing the Nupur Talwar’s bail application.
