Suraj Pancholi would not have imagined this in his wildest dreams — getting popular for an alleged love affair. Son of Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab, 21-year-old Suraj was about to realise his Bollywood dream (Salman Khan was to launch him in a film titled Hero). But actress Jiah Khan’s suicide has landed him in jail. After over three hours of questioning by the Mumbai Police, Suraj was arrested on Monday.
Additional Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil said that Suraj had been arrested and booked under section 306 of IPC for his alleged role in Jiah’s suicide. Suraj will be produced before a city court on Tuesday.
The relations between Jiah and Suraj, who had been going steady for more than a year, had gone sour in the recent weeks, after she found that even while being in a relationship with her, he was allegedly “womanising”. Suraj was the last person whom Jiah had spoken to on the night of June 3 before she committed suicide by hanging herself later that night.
What has made mattes difficult for Suraj is a five-page suicide note purportedly written by Jiah before committing suicide. Her family members discovered the note late last week. The note, which was produced by Jiah’s mother, Rabiya Khan, has some shocking details.
Rabiya claimed that it was her daughter’s suicide note. It mentioned things like “If you’re reading this I might have already left or about to leave. I am broken inside. You may not have known this but you affected me deeply to a point where I lost myself in loving you... I was scared of getting pregnant but I gave myself completely. The pain you have caused me everyday has destroyed every bit of me, destroyed my soul. I can't eat or sleep or think or function. I am running away from everything.”
The original copy of the letter is with police now for handwriting verification.
Rabiya claimed that her daughter’s drastic step was not due to the lack of assignments but due to her troubled relationship with her boyfriend Suraj. “She was attending at least three to four events a month. She was making money and was living comfortably in her house with two maids and even had a car and a driver. It was the insecurity that her love was not respected and recognised that was killing her day by day,” she said.
Though the letter does not bear any name but it reflects Jiah’s depressed state. It mentions things like, “After all the pain, the rape, the abuse, the torture I have seen previously I didn’t deserve this. I didn’t see any love or commitment from you. I just became increasingly scared that you would hurt me mentally or physically...” It added, “I aborted our baby when it hurt me deeply. You promised me once we made it to one year we would get engaged. All you want in life is partying, your women and your selfish motives. All I wanted was you and my happiness you took both away from me.”
“If I stay here I will crave you and miss you. So I am kissing my 10-year career and dreams goodbye. I never told you but I received a message about you. About you cheating on me. I chose to ignore it, decided to trust you. You embarrassed me,” Jiah wrote.
“I knew about his (Suraj’s) abusing her and not respecting her and also about the presents and the Goa trip that Jiah has mentioned in the letter. But I found out other aspects, which were hurtful.The letter does not have a name, so who it is addressed to is something you can only ask Jiah. But because of the incidents in the past and what she told me, all of these things point out to Suraj Pancholi,” said Rabiya in a statement to the media.
