A day after she was brutally attacked by her classmate, Akash, in Jawaharlal Nehru University, doctors said that Roshni Kumari Gupta’s condition was still critical. However, they said that she was responding to treatment.

Doctors fear that she may lose her faculty of speech. They have not ruled out the possibility of a paralytic stroke, as her skull has sustained massive injuries damaging nerves. “There are chances of stroke. Some of the nerve cells which give impulse to the brain have been affected,” said an official in the neurosurgery department.

Her pulse rate and blood pressure are being monitored on regular intervals. If she is able to breathe on her own, she will be shifted to out of the ICU.

“Roshni has suffered four deep injuries on the skull. Vessels supplying blood to the brain have been damaged. The fronto parietal portion area of the skull has been badly damaged after she was attacked with a sharp weapon. Although two operations were conducted, still some pieces of bones are inside the brain and it needs to be removed. The clot in her brain (haematoma) was also removed during the surgery. Her right wrist was badly slashed in the attack,” informed a senior doctor of the hospital.

According to senior officials of the hospital, another CT scan and a routine blood test were conducted on Thursday. Meanwhile, a team of doctors from neurosurgery, plastic surgery and orthopedic surgeon are monitoring her health condition. Dr BD Athani, medical superintendent of the hospital, said another round of medical test will be conducted on Friday and based on the results, the medical team will decide on the future course of action.

Meanwhile, a woman delegation of the BJP reached the hospital to see the victim but denied access. They later spoke with the doctors and enquired about her health.
