Yogesh Kumar Tyagi — Dean and Professor of Faculty of legal Studies at South Asian University (SAU) — has been appointed new Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University and would be joining office “at the earliest”.

“I am very happy as I take this position as an opportunity to take DU to greater heights. I received the formal communication today (Monday) through SAU. I will settle down my work and responsibilities here and then make a move to DU. Honestly, I cannot tell the date but I will join soon,” Tyagi told The Pioneer.

Tyagi has a PhD in legal Studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University and llM in legal Studies from Columbia University. He said he is very positive and would invite ideas in making the university better.

“I need everyone’s support, including the media...someone asked me this is a challenge but I feel it is an opportunity because so many things need to be done. There are lot of human resources and means through which we do a lot of good things constructively,” said Tyagi.  Sources from the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) had confirmed about Tyagi’s appointment on February 9. However, the joining date has been delayed due to his current position at SAU.

Tyagi was selected from a list of four candidates by Visitor President Pranab Mukherjee’s whose official approval came on Monday.

His research interests include international law, international organisations, human rights legal theory and globalisation.

The search-cum-selection committee had shortlisted four names for the high- profile post, including Tyagi, Rameshwar Nath Kaul Bamezai, former IIT professor and UPSC member, Hemchand Gupta and DU professor in Political Science department, Bidyuth Chakraborty that were sent to the HRD Ministry last month.

After former VC Dinesh Singh’s controversial term ended in October 28, the office has been under its pro-VC Professor Sudhish Pachauri.
