A 45-year-old Indonesian man, Fredy, died after he choked on a piece of chicken wing on Friday in Jakarta while taking part in a chicken-eating competition, local media reported.
The competition, organised by fast-food chain Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) had three participants who raced to eat the fried chicken wings in the least amount of time possible.
“When the incident happened, Fredy was taking part in the competition, which requires its participants to eat three chicken wings as fast as possible in five minutes.
The competition offers a prize of up to Rp 5 billion,” said Chief of the General Crime Unit of the Tangerang Resort Police Adj Comr Taufik Iksan to reporters.
Fredy then drank water and was given first aids by the organiser, who also took him to the nearest clinic.
“However, when the doctor checked on him, he was already dead,” Taufik said, adding the police are now investigating the case.
