Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s private secretary and close confidant RK Dhawan died at a Delhi hospital on Monday around 7pm. He was 81. Dhawan was admitted to hospital last Tuesday for age-related ailments.
“Our homage to veteran Congress leader RK Dhawan, who breathed his last today. His tireless spirit, immeasurable commitment & untiring dedication to the Congress ideals will always be remembered. RIP,” Congress’ communications incharge Randeep Surjewala tweeted.
Dhawan was active in Delhi Congress too and was considered one of the political heavyweights of the national Capital.
“He was perhaps the second or third most powerful person of the country. Being close to the most powerful PM India has ever had, Dhawan remained a less controversial man and a hardcore Congressman until he breathed his last. He was also frequent to the present Gandhi regime (Sonia and Rahul Gadnhi,” the Congress leader said.
