In the backdrop of the worsening situation in Afghanistan, India on Wednesday proposed a three-point way forward to restore peace.  With the Taliban surging ahead in many parts of the country, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said the international community is against the “seizure of power by violence and force” and will not “legitimise such actions.”

Presenting his country’s views on the issue at the two-day Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, Jaishankar also said fighting terrorism and curbing terror finance are big challenges facing the region besides the Afghanistan situation and post-Covid recovery. Addressing the conclave of Foreign Ministers of the SCO, Jaishankar said, “The world, region and the Afghan people all want the same end state.”

He then outlined three points for restoring peace.  The first proposal is “an independent, neutral, unified, peaceful, democratic and prosperous nation.”

In a series of tweets after the meeting of the contact group of the SCO, he said the second proposal is “ceasing violence and terrorist attacks against civilians and State representatives, settle the conflict through political dialogue, and respect interests of all ethnic groups.
