CJI office acknowledges missive; rape survivor critical
The Unnao rape survivor and two of her family members had written to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) three weeks ago apprehending threat to their lives by the accused persons in the case.
The letter written on July 12 has come to light two days after the 19-year-old girl was travelling with her family on Sunday when their car was hit by a speeding truck at Gurubakshganj area of Raebareli, killing her two aunts.
The girl and her advocate are battling for their life in the Intensive Care Unit.
News agency PTI quoted an official of the Supreme Court saying the letter written in Hindi has been received by the office of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, who has asked the court’s Secretary General to prepare a note out of it and place it before him.
The letter written by the survivor and two of her family members was also sent to the Allahabad High Court and other authorities of the Uttar Pradesh Government.
The letter signed by the girl, her mother, and aunt stated that on July 7 Naveen Singh, son of rape accused Shashi Singh, Manoj Singh, brother of another accused Kuldeep Singh, and one Kunnu Mishra had visited their house and threatened to kill them.
The next day, another person came to their house with the same threat.
The victim and the family said along with the letter they were also attaching the video of the car in which these persons came to their house.
Kuldeep Singh Sengar, a four-time BJP MLA from UP’s Bangermau, is an accused in the rape case and was arrested last year in April.
The letter narrates the incidents of July 7-8 when some people allegedly associated with Sengar threatened the victim’s family with dire consequences.
The letter to the CJI also sought a direction for registration of FIR against the persons. An FIR which was lodged a day after the car crash names the BJP legislator, his brother Manoj Singh Sengar, Vinod Mishra, Haripal Singh, Naveen Singh, Komal Singh, Arun Singh, Gyandendra Singh, Rinku Singh and Awadhesh Singh as accused.
The rape case had come to light after the victim allegedly attempted self-immolation outside Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s residence last year.
Meanwhile, a team of the National Commission for Women (NCW) met the mother of the Unnao rape survivor in Lucknow on Tuesday.
The woman’s mother requested the NCW to facilitate the release of the girl’s uncle Mahesh Singh, lodged in a Raebareli jail, to enable him to perform the last rites of his wife, who died in the incident on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Allahabad High Court on Tuesday granted one-day parole Singh to attend the last rites of his wife.
The two-member committee have met her mother but could not meet the rape survivor as doctors advised against it, the commission said.
In its report, the NCW said the chief medical superintendent informed the team that the woman is in a ventilator and critical but stable. The hospital said there were injuries in her head and lungs.
