Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Tuesday wrote a strong letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee asking her to meet him at the Raj Bhavan in Kolkata within a week’s time to discuss the deteriorating law and order situation in the State.
Reporting the development a Raj Bhavan tweet said, “WB Guv Jagdeep Dhankhar has invited Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for interaction during the week at Raj Bhawan to deliberate worsening law and order in the state, particularly in view of alarmingly worrisome developments.”
Dhankhar’s letter comes in the wake of the Birbhum carnage and the subsequent scuffle between the BJP and Trinamool Congress MLAs inside the State Assembly on Monday.
The letter written to the Chief Minister, who is presently in Darjeeling, said, “Recent alarmingly worrisome developments, reflecting... increased lawlessness and violence, make it imperative that you spare time earliest for an interaction at Raj Bhavan,” adding, “Already cliff-hanging governance in the State, from the perspective of Constitution and law, has recently been further strained by horrifying incidents at Rampurhat and in the hallowed precincts of the Assembly.”
The Governor is also known to have expressed his concern over the Chief Minister’s earlier alleged offensive comments on the CBI investigation in Rampurhat burning case. Attacking the BJP, Banerjee had earlier said that her government would cooperate with the CBI in the Birbhum case but warned “if they (central agency) are found to be taking instructions from the BJP then we will descend on the streets and start a political movement taking the people by our side”.
Dhankhar’s letter comes a day after he returned from Delhi where he met Home Minister Amit Shah and reportedly discussed the deterioratinglaw and order situation in the State.
