In a major breakthrough in 2002 Godhra train carnage case, the Gujarat Police arrested Yakub Patalia, an absconding accused, on Tuesday.

63-year-old Patalia, who was on the run for the past 16 years, was nabbed from Godhra town. During a patrolling in the wee hours on Tuesday, the police received important information about the whereabouts of the accused, said a police officer.

“Now we will hand over Patalia to the Special Investigation Team (SIT),” said the official.

In the Godhra train carnage case, the Gujarat High Court had commuted the death sentence of 11 convicts to life imprisonment, while upholding the life sentence of 20 other convicts.
